Mayor Promotes "Small Business Saturday" November 29

Mayor Chris Beutler today encouraged residents to support local independently-owned businesses by participating in the fifth annual "Small Business Saturday" November 29. The event falls between "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday" and highlights how small local businesses help boost local economies.

"Last Friday, we learned that Lincoln's unemployment rate has dipped to 2.8 percent - an eight-year low," Mayor Beutler said. "The number of people employed in our community is at an all-time high, and sales tax revenues continue to increase. Lincoln's small businesses continue to drive that growth. Across the U.S., small businesses create two-thirds of the net new jobs, generate half of the private gross domestic product and employ 55 percent of the working population in our nation. When you shop at a locally-owned business, it's estimated that your dollar has three times the impact on your community as a dollar spent at national chains."

The Mayor was joined by representatives of the Nebraska Retail Federation, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lincoln Association, Lincoln Independent Business Association and local retailers at a news conference at Wright's Jewelers, which is celebrating its 35th year in business. The Mayor issued a proclamation encouraging residents to support small businesses and merchants Saturday and throughout the year.

Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 by American Express, which offers promotions for shoppers and retailers. It is also supported by Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), a non-partisan small business advocate and operational arm of the Small Business Saturday Coalition.

"In 2013, elected officials in all 50 states and Washington D.C. championed Small Business Saturday which helped drive consumers to small, independently-owned businesses on the day," said Barbara Kasoff, WIPP President. "This year, we are urging Mayors everywhere to show their support and encourage their communities to 'shop small' during the holiday season."

Last year, consumers spent $5.7 billion at independently-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday, up from $5.5 billion in 2012. More information is available at smallbusinesssaturday.com.
