The public is invited to the lighting ceremony Sunday, December 21 for "Ascent," the glass tower by Omaha artist Jun Kaneko at 13th and "P" streets. The ceremony begins at 5:03 p.m., the beginning of the winter solstice, and it will mark the formal dedication of Lincoln's newest park, the Lincoln Community Foundation Tower Square.
"Since the tower was installed this fall, it has quickly become a downtown icon, even without the interior lights," said Mayor Beutler. "Now that the lights are installed, we are ready for the public to experience Ascent in all its glory. At the same time, we will officially welcome Lincoln Community Foundation Tower Square, our City's newest gathering spot."
In addition to creating Ascent, Kaneko designed the entire park. He and Mayor Beutler will give brief remarks at the lighting ceremony.
Ascent was funded through private donations. An endowment for the maintenance of the art elements in the park has been funded by the Sheila Dickinson Dinsmore Graf Fund at the Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF). This significant gift to the City kicks off the 60th anniversary of the LCF.
