Casey Sheppard Designs “Steam-Punk” Jewelry

Lincoln’s own Parrish Studios which is located at 1416 O Street, already houses an eclectic group of inspiring art-minded individuals that produce unusually-creative works and services for the public. Casey Sheppard is the newest jewelry designer to move into studio 39.

“I used to work out of my basement and now I am very fortunate to be among some extreme talent here in the Parrish.  It’s great because Jim Stevens [building owner] is very supportive of the arts and of what we are all doing here,” said Sheppard.

Fortunately, DLA was able to get past “India,” Sheppard’s massive (but gentle) brindled boxer, to gain some insight from the designer.

Casey Sheppard Designs specializes in one-of-a-kind jewelry ranging from earring sets, necklaces, bracelets, and rings as well as wall pieces.  She uses the technique of soldering to transform metals such as sterling silver into “unusual, unique wearable art.”  Sheppard also experiments with cold connections which are basic mechanical joining techniques used to fasten together parts that cannot be soldered (i.e., using a “hot” connection) such as rivets, tabs, screws, knots, prongs, and bezels.

Sheppard’s early designs were considered very organic, earthy pieces but have evolved into post apocalyptic-raw looks with futuristic flair.  One of Sheppard’s friends described her current work as “Steam-Punk” which is a subgenre of “punk” fashion that uses style combinations from the Victorian era England and the Industrial Revolution.  The designs can be seen at http://www.caseyshepparddesigns.com or through her Facebook Page

“Much of my inspiration comes from Tim Burton films like Sleepy Hollow.  I’ve seen Alice in Wonderland [Burton’s most recent film] twice now and would definitely go again.  I love the way all of the different lines, shapes, and colors fit together to make unique patterns…especially in the costume design [by Colleen Atwood].  I’m also really into the British comic Tank Girl [created by Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin],” commented Sheppard.

Even though Casey is completely self-taught, she has had the advantage of growing up in a family of successful artists.  Her brother is a painter living in Las Vegas as well as her dad who resides in Iowa.  Sheppard’s Mom specializes in mosaics and lives here in Lincoln.

“When I was a studio assistant for Sydney Lynch she taught me to solder.  Sydney was my first connection to jewelry and will remain a strong mentor in my jewelry career.”

On April 15th from 5-8 pm, jewelry designers: Casey Sheppard, Sydney Lynch, Jette Vogt, Sara Bucy, and Lori Paulsen are pulling together to have a trunk show at Fleur which is located at 440 N 8th Street, Suite 130 in the Haymarket.  Wine will be provided by bin 105 and hor d’ouerves by Bread and Cup

Sheppard has already successfully participated in many art auctions at venues such as the Lied Center in Lincoln and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha.  Today, she continues to gain much recognition for her work especially by customers she serves at Dish, a local downtown restaurant known for its modern American cuisine.
