Downtown Matchup: Downtown Columbus vs. Downtown Lincoln

Visit Downtown Columbus’ Website

The Ohio State Buckeyes of Columbus, Ohio will be taking the field against the #14 Nebraska Cornhuskers tomorrow for the Huskers first home game in 3 weeks. The Buckeyes come into the bout 3-2, with losses to Miami and Michigan State, while the Huskers come in at 4-1 after dropping the conference-opener to Wisconsin in Madison this past weekend.

While the Huskers are prepping for their first Big 10 conference home game, many Columbusites are making the 815 mile trek to Lincoln, becoming the first Big 10 fans to visit our city since Nebraska has been in the conference. In honor of many Buckeye fans making the long, monotonous drive through the lively Midwest, we take a quick look at the city that they call home.

A year away from celebrating its bicentennial, the city of Columbus, Ohio is the largest city in the state and the 15th most populous city in the nation. The city bolsters three major sports franchises and is widely regarded as one of the strongest and most diverse art communities in the country.

Not only is the city home to Ohio State (the country’s largest college campus) and the Ohio Statehouse (where Abraham Lincoln visited twice and was laid in state after his assassination), it’s also home to one of the country’s largest downtowns, an area that sees over 10 million visitors every year.

Marc Conte, Research Director at Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District [CCSID] of Downtown Columbus, explains what makes downtown Columbus so special.

“Columbus is an open and smart community and no place exemplifies this better than downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods. Downtown is the heart of the region, an intersection of commerce, arts and entrepreneurial spirit. There’s a growing number of independent businesses and artists that give downtown its unique flavor. When visiting, don’t be surprised by downtown’s urbanity, diversity and friendliness.”

As we did the past few weeks with Fresno, Seattle, Laramie and Madison, we continue to look at the cities of our Husker competitors to see how Lincoln sizes up. Below is a comparison of the city of Lincoln and the city of Columbus and their respective downtowns.
