Mary Pipher to Appear at Indigo Bridge Books

Bestselling author and internationally renowned psychologist and anthropologist Mary Pipher will speak at Indigo Bridge Books later this month.  Pipher will read from her newest book, Seeking Peace: Chronicles of the Worst Buddhist in the World, which has just been released in paperback.  The reading will be followed by an informal discussion and book signing.  Student and community groups are welcome.

Dr. Mary Pipher was raised in rural Nebraska, attended the University of California at Berkeley where she received a BA in Cultural Anthropology, then returned to Nebraska to earn her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nebraska.  After 15 years as a respected practicing therapist and psychologist, Dr. Pipher gained international success as an author with the 1994 publication of Reviving Ophelia:  Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls, which spent 27 weeks in the #1 slot on the New York Times Best Sellers List.  Since then, Dr. Pipher has published 7 other books, 2 of which also achieved NYT Bestseller status.  She gained international attention once again in 2007 when she returned her 2006 American Psychological Association Presidential Citation in protest of the group’s refusal to ban its members from participating in interrogations at US detention centers.  Mary Pipher lives and writes in Lincoln, which she has called home since 1977.

Dr. Mary Pipher’s eighth book (Riverhead Paperback, April 2010) is part spiritual memoir, part autobiography, and part inspirational guide.  Dr. Pipher tells the story of how she came to focus on life’s journeys and not its destinations in the comfortable, thoughtful prose that has made her such an accessible icon of contemporary culture.  “The basic map and milestones of my story are universal,” writes Pipher.  “We strive to make sense of our selves and our environments.”

Opened by Kim and Bob Coleman in the fall of 2008, Indigo Bridge Books became Lincoln’s only independently owned new bookstore with the closing of Lee Booksellers this January.  As such, Indigo is dedicated to providing the community with a friendly, dependable, local source for all things literary.
