New Trees Breathe Life Downtown

DLA & The Lincoln Community Work Together In Tree Plantings

This spring, in honor of Earth Day and Arbor Day, the Downtown Lincoln Association was pleased to announce the planting of the first of 147 new trees downtown.  Over 38 different varieties of trees were planted in new areas downtown as well as replaced some current deteriorating trees.  Currently, 120 of the 147 trees have been planted downtown, but not without the help from AmeriCorps, VISTA Members and the Arbor Day Foundation.

A group of 15 AmeriCorps and VISTA Members volunteered their time in May to plant 13 trees downtown around 8th and M Streets. The AmeriCorps and VISTA volunteers’ hard work allow for additional green space to the city, thus helping the environment. The members also had the privilege of learning from the experts with the city about the appropriate process for planting the trees. DLA would like to extend a large thank you to all AmeriCorps and VISTA Members involved. DLA would also like to give their appreciation to the Arbor Day Foundation and their employees who helped plant 24 trees downtown.

The planting of primarily Oak and Flowering trees should be completed this month and will renew or air supply, provide shade and keep downtown looking green and attractive. For more information on the downtown tree planting, please contact DLA Maintenance Director George Pinkerton at 441-0020 or email him at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
