Welcome to The Music Box

The Music Box (MBX) is Downtown Lincoln’s newest creative hub, located on the corner of 14th & N streets.

The Music Box was unveiled on Thursday, April 24th at the Mayor’s news conference. Left to right: Zach Watkins (I See Melody), Todd Ogden (DLA), Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, Brody Weber (Lincoln City Council), and Philip Zach (Grid Studios).

With the mission of incubating and uplifting Lincoln’s music scene, the Music Box is available for rehearsals, performances and educational events that support our bustling music scene and encourage tourism Downtown.

The space, owned by the City of Lincoln and operated by the Downtown Lincoln Association, features a raised stage, professional sound and lighting equipment, a compact recording studio, LED screens for additional visual art opportunities and a gated outdoor area. This project is a huge collaboration between the City of Lincoln, Downtown Lincoln Association, Grid Studio, HDR Architecture and Blue Rock Construction.

DLA was awarded $2.25 million in grant funds from the State of Nebraska Department of Economic Development in support of the Downtown Lincoln Music District. As the first major endeavor with these funds, DLA got to work with the City, local artists and Downtown businesses in developing a much-needed, low-barrier rehearsal venue for our music community.

Thanks to DLA’s partnership with Grid Studio (Zach Watkins and Philip Zach), the Music Box offers not only rehearsal and recording services, but a Music Box Academy and an artist development program to further nurture and grow Lincoln’s music scene. MBX Academy will focus on bringing quality education surrounding the trades and business of music. Classes will be held twice a year (for 8-12 weeks each), a spring and a fall semester, with a potential shorter and more focused summer session.

The MBX Artist Development program will accept applications from musicians to grow their brand and gain valuable experience in the music industry. Awardees will work with our team to develop a four-song EP, music video, press photos, social media and branding strategy and more.

DLA is dedicated to working with local artists to continue to make the Music Box a unique and community-built venue. Artists will be able to use their skills to fill the adjacent driveway of the Music Box with murals and other art installations. Stay tuned to Downtown Lincoln’s social media and website to learn about additional art opportunities.

You can help support the Music Box May 1-May 29 through Give to Lincoln Day! The Downtown Lincoln Foundation (a 501c3 nonprofit) will be featured at https://givetolincoln.com/nonprofits/downtown-lincoln-foundation throughout the month and will use contributions to support Music Box operations and programming.
