Nighttime Cityscape Plein Air Painting Workshop by Julia Noyes

Date and Time for this Past Event

Location

Details

Noyes will teach how to do a Nighttime Cityscape painting using the plein air approach. The painting location will be downtown at the corner of 9th and O st. on the West side of the street. The class will meet at the Noyes Art Gallery at 119 South 9, just a half block from the painting location, at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at night. Note this is a nighttime class. Don’t worry about parking. There are an abundance of parking lots and street parking spots.
The plein air technique was a focus that many impressionist artists, like Monet used. For example, Monet did a series of cathedral paintings at various times of the day capturing the light and essence of the scene. These paintings are not detailed but rather “impressions”.
This class will focus on capturing the feel and the impression of the city at night. The location will include the 0 st. viaduct juxtaposed against antique looking streetlights, the converging sidewalk, old buildings, people walking and the reflections of the lights on the architecture and surroundings.
Noyes will demonstrate how to photograph, sketch, and develop a small painting.
Participants will take their own photos of the area, sketch from their photo and develop a painting. She suggests that the participant come with a canvas painted yellow orche or orange. This is optional.
Each participant will bring their own supplies, phone camera, a pencil for sketching, a small canvas of your choice, watercolor or acrylics or pastel, a variety of brushes, an easel or card table to work on, chair, and water, rags.

Noyes will demonstrate using acrylic paints. Participants many use any colors. Noyes suggests color schemes such as
1. Blue dominance: Prussian, ultramarine, thalo blue, turquoise, Payne’s gray, white, black, orange, any metallic colors.
2. Brown dominance: Burnt sienna, umber, copper, black, white, any blues, silver, any metallics.
The class may want to continue the Impression Artist tradition and follow up the class by going out to a café for a discussion on art.
Advanced registration is required. The cost is $60. Preregistration payments can be made over the phone at Noyes Art Gallery, 119 S 9th Street, 402-475-1061. Limited enrollment.
