Start your First Friday Art Walk off with Project 317! Our featured artist is the late Colleen Eubanks.
An accomplished folk artist, Colleen is known for her distinctively warm paintings of country life and the traditional values of home and family.
Born and raised in Nebraska, Colleen recalled drawing farm scenes as a young girl with her father. With the encouragement of her parents, Colleen pursued her interest in art while attending UNL. While completing a degree in education, she took classes in art, textiles, and design. She developed her signature painting style during the time she taught art-related classes at a local community college.
Colleen drew inspiration for her rural "lifescapes" from childhood memories and travel experiences across the Midwest. Working with alkyd oils, her paintings are softer and brighter than other primitive folk art styles. Colleen also avoided period references in many of her pieces in order to invoke a timeless quality. For example, the image of a pastoral setting could reflect any Early American town or a quant, modern day village.
The mother of three grown sons the the grandmother of six, Colleen resided in Lincoln with her husband and business partner, Gene, until she passed away on January 11th of this year. Her paintings have been displayed at various shows and galleries and had also been commissioned by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
