Details

Solomon Butcher had a grand plan: to create a photographic record and write down the history of sod house homesteaders in Nebraska. He produced 1500 images and collected biographies and stories from Nebraska residents, creating what is regarded as the best record of sod house settlement in the world.

Butcher's collection, which is housed at History Nebraska, has been used countless times by both amateur and professional researchers. His photographs have been featured in textbooks and histories. This exhibit provides Nebraska History Museum visitors a brand new way to experience these significant photographs. In addition to a sod wall display, visitors are encouraged to step into the photos themselves with multiple selfie stations.
