About the Book:
This book is both a tribute and a love letter to Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American doctor in the United States. Dr. Susan became a physician in 1889, and she served her Native people on the Macy reservation at a time when her people were in desperate need of medical help and leadership. Infectious diseases and medical care in the 1890’s are described as well as Dr. Susan’s work in promoting justice for her people. The challenges encountered by the Omaha Natives in interacting with a white culture are described. The first settlers of our land, the Native Americans, have suffered great losses since the 1700s. Americans today can help Native people to heal from this “trauma of the soul.” With our help, the Omaha people can continue to grow and progress With its colorful photos and illustrations, the book has been described as enlightening, inspiring, and “must-reading” for all Nebraskans.
A portion of the profits from book sales will be donated to assist with the restoration of the Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte Center, located on the reservation. The Center will include a Native American cultural center and museum, a medical clinic for the underserved and for patients with mental health and substance use disorders, a center for youth programs, and an outdoor amphitheater and community gardens. The restored Center will be a wonderful gift to Omaha Native Americans and to all Nebraskans.
