From the eighteenth century, American artists have traveled the world in pursuit of inspiration and artistic advancement. Many traveled to Europe to learn from the art historical canon or to witness the development of avant-garde art, while others ventured to Latin America, Asia, and Africa seeking exposure to cultures and landscapes unfamiliar to them. Americans Abroad surveys work in the museum’s collection by artists who drew inspiration from their travels outside the United States.

This exhibition is organized by Christian Wurst, associate curator for exhibitions.
