Join Surface Impressions exhibition juror and artist Janine Wong for a conversation about her inventive approach to printmaking and her ongoing exploration of color. Wong’s work investigates how color creates meaning through relationships—through shifts in hue, value, and saturation. Her research into “how we understand color” has led to experimental investigations in monotypes, artist books, and print processes that reveal the subtle complexities of perception.
An artist, educator, and designer, Wong brings together a background in architecture, design, and printmaking with a lifelong curiosity about how we experience the visual world. She will share insights into her creative process and the ideas that continue to shape her work.
Following the talk, Janine will then be in residence for a week at Constellation Studios to spark a new print series with concentrated time.

Constellation Studios, in partnership with the LUX Center for the Arts, presents Surface Impressions: Coloratura, the fourth biennial exhibition of contemporary relief printmaking. This international juried exhibition features hand-produced relief prints, including woodblock, linoleum cut, wood engraving, and mixed media relief works by artists from across the world.

Surface Impressions highlights the continued relevance of relief printmaking as a dynamic and adaptable medium, showcasing a wide range of approaches to carving, printing, and color. The 2026 theme, Coloratura, emphasizes experimentation with color, layering, and surface, revealing how artists use relief processes to create bold visual impact and nuanced material expression.
Prints in this exhibition are selected through an open call and juried by Janine Wong, a multidisciplinary artist, designer, and printmaker whose work explores color, systems, and abstraction.

Cash prizes for the top three winners will be awarded and announced on August 7th. One print will be selected for acquisition by the Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln.
