The Chief Standing Bear Prize for Courage Project proudly announces that Deb Haaland has been selected as the 2025 recipient of the Chief Standing Bear Prize for Courage. She made history as the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary. She is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna and a 35th-generation New Mexican.
The Standing Bear Prize for Courage is a project of the Chief Standing Bear Project Inc., which aims to recognize individuals who embody the courageous spirit of Chief Standing Bear.
The Standing Bear Prize for Courage is a project of the Chief Standing Bear Project Inc. The Purpose of the Corporation is to promote the life and civil rights legacy of Chief Standing Bear, a Native American of the Ponca Tribe, by presenting public discussion groups, forums, lectures and other events, and annually recognizing with a cash award a person who exemplifies courage in the spirit of Standing Bear.
